Extend Composite Video or S-Video using
Low Cost Twisted Pair CAT5 BNC Extenders

Product Application Notes

With a simple modification to the video input cable, the VOPEX CAT5 VGA Video Splitter/Extender can extend composite video or s-video using low cost twisted pair CAT5 BNC extenders. The modification to the video input cable allows s-video to be extended using two twisted pairs of CAT5 cable, or allows composite video to be extended using a single twisted pair of CAT5 cable. Transmitting composite video using this method triples the number of available receivers per CATx port of the VOPEX video splitter/extender at a fraction of the cost.

To modify the video input cable, take either a composite video yellow RCA cable (RRCVEXT-xx-MM), or a s-video 4-pin Mini DIN cable (SVEXT-xx-MM), and wire one end to a female 15HD solder cup connector (15HDF-SLDR) using the following wiring diagram. Use this cable to connect the video source to the video input of the VOPEX CAT5 VGA Video Splitter/Extender. To extend the signal, connect one end of a CAT5 patch cable terminated with a RJ45 connector to the desired CAT5 video output port, and connect the corresponding unterminated twisted pair wires to the BALUN-STBNC remote unit.
